The Do’s and Don’ts of Washing Natural Hair

Washing my hair is such a long process that I have to set out a huge chunk of my day. As I’ve learned how long this process is, I want to help out all my natural sistas out with the do’s and dont’s of a long natural hair wash day. This includes the pre-poo, washing, and drying.

Pre-Poo

I always pre-poo my hair, preferably with castor oil. Castor oil is my go-to oil. I usually apply heat or let it sit in for a half hour with a plastic cap over my head.

Please note: Pre-poo is not for everyone. I do pre-poo along with a deep condition treatment because of my low porosity hair. It just works for me.

Next, it’s wash time. The easiest part. I use Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo (it’s fragrance-free, too!) or Shea Moisture 10 in 1 Renewal System shampoo + conditioner (depending on my mood, I guess). I like the Raw Shea Butter shampoo because it feels like I can skip the conditioner step and go ahead and apply deep conditioner treatment.

Rinse and Dry

After rinsing out the shampoo and/or conditioner from my hair, I shake my curls a little bit and wait a while for it to get damp (around 5 minutes). Then, I apply TGIN Hair Masque as my deep condition treatment. I let it soak in for about 45 minutes and then rinse out my hair.

Curls, Curls, Curls!

By the time I have rinsed out the deep conditioner treatment, my hair is feeling blissful and bouncy with curls. At this point, I dry my hair with a T-shirt to retain my curls and prevent damage from a towel which can be too harsh. I shake out my curls and either do a wash-n-go or a twist with TGIN twisting cream. Now, that’s my wash routine. I hope to see yours! Hit me up in the comments.
