Whether you live in New York or Florida, winter is approaching and your natural hair has to be ready for the cold weather. Cold weather has different effects on natural hair. For a lot of people, it’s hard to retain moisture in the winter, which makes their hair very dry. So, what can you do for your natural hair during the winter months? Here are a few tips.
First, keep your hair moisturized.
Your hair and especially your scalp can get very dry in the cold. There’s very little moisture in the air during the winter time.
On a daily basis, massage your scalp with black castor oil or another essential oil for moisture retention (check out this post on The Best Oils for Natural Hair
Second, try some protective hairstyles like box-braids, faux locs, sew-ins, etc (check out this post on “Best Protective Styles (Pictures Only)” also).

Third, opt for hats, silk linings, and scarfs. The great thing about wearing protective styles or hats/scarfs is that you don’t have to worry about doing your natural hair. We all know doing our natural hair takes up so much time.
If you are wearing your natural hair this winter, take the extra steps to ensure your hair is still getting moisturized. Deep-condition more than you usually do – consider doing it bi-weekly. In addition, implement heating methods during your deep-conditioning. You can buy heat caps off of Amazon or even find them in beauty supply stores – it’s cheaper on Amazon though :). Also, pre-poo! Pre-poo is basically a pre-shampoo treatment when you use oils like castor or coconut to ensure the moisture doesn’t get stripped from your hair when you wash it.
I hope these winter tips for your natural hair was helpful. Good luck! Don’t forget to check out the other articles on Best Protective Styles and the Best Oils for Natural Hair. I also have a post on Wash Day if you want some tips on pre-pooing, shampooing, and deep-conditioning (and the products I use).
